I am in the process of changing my hub assembly due to blown bearing and cannot seem to get my rotor off. Does any one have any input for me? I've got the bolts off just fine but the rotor and ?? (wheel carrier bolt up piece won't budge.
Dumb question:
You do have the caliper assembly off, correct?
Then the the rotor should slide right off the lugs. If it is rusted, you may need to use a soft faced hammer.
The rotors can become seized to the hub assembly over time due to corrosion, and that's probably what's happened to you. If you can get the nuts off the back side of the knuckle that's holding the hub in, you can remove the hub and rotor as one piece. Once it's free and easier to work on, you should be able to get some penetrating oil between the hub and rotor. It will probably take some beating to get the rotor off, and you may end up destroying the rotor in the process. Also, if you can apply some heat to the inner part of the face of the rotor, say with a propane or MAP gas torch, it may help it expand some and free it up.
Scott, I was replacing my rotors cause they were junk so I didn`t have any reservations about beating them. If I were saving them I would use a torch judiciously on the seam without transfering too much heat to the hub and bearing. with some penetrant over night and fire like was mentioned and they will come loose. The flame will expand the metal just enough to seperate along with some hammers and blocks, Good luck
So after an hour last night and two this morning I finally got the rotor off the hub.
I removed the hub from the knuckle and the proceeded to beat the heck out of it. No luck. So I took a 2x4 and stuck it into the outer side of the hub were the lock inserts. Well it is a tight fit after I drove it in, but worked great as I beat the crap out of it, 5 minutes later it was apart. Got the studs off in another 15 minutes.
I recommend to get replacement studs (holding the hub to the knuckle) for anyone attemping this, it will save time.
