I bought a 1980 Ford Thunderbird for the 302 and auto to put into my '61 F100. I bought a service manual for the Thunderbird and found out it also came with a 255v8.How can I find out if I have a 302 and not a 255? I already junked the car, so I can't check the id tag. Thanks for the help.
Greg, Are there any labels on the valve covers. There should be a label and it should refer to the engine as a 5.0L if it is a 302. The other engine might be a 4.0L or 4.2L, I'm not sure. There are about 60 cubes per Liter (guesstamate).
See if you can find it. :-)

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
The 255 engine, used a intake manifold much like the 272/292/312, in that it has a space under the carb. for air to flow under it. The 302 did not have this. You can look at the intake manifold and see "opens" around the runners on the 255.
Having owned a 255, let me try to help. First give away, like Packrat said, was the intake was not solid, but rather had air spaces between the runners.
Next, if you get the chance to inspect the block, there should be a cast number somewhere that id's the block.
Finally, I thought that Ford only used the 255 in it's cars in 1980, not the 302. I could easily be wrong, but I'mm pretty sure. Let me know.

Ben
Ben,
The intake manifold is the air gap type, not solid. Before I was told by a friend to check to make sure I didnt get the 255, I went and bought a timing chain, oil pump all for a 302. The new parts looked identical to the old ones and bolted right on. Will they work? Thank for the help.
The timing chain sets were all the same for the 221,260,289,302, 351W, and the 255. what you have to watch for is on the early to mid 60's, the cam gear may or may not use a spacer behind it. The other thing was, in early 90's Ford started using a double roller chain set that will fit right in place of the older sets...the double roller is a lot better set.
