3 spd auto problem

I just aquired a 66 f100 swb. It has a 390 with a 3 spd auto trans. (c6 maybe?)The truck hasnt been a daily driver for about 6 years and has only been driven about 50 miles in the last 2 years. Sometimes when I shift into drive it takes a few seconds (maybe 4 or 5) for the trans to "engage". It gets better as it warms up. Anyone ever had this problem? I'm new to classic fords, I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

gostros, Welcome to FTE The nations truck stop.

Does the gear selector have a green dot? That should be your drive position. Have you checked the fluid level? It could have developed some issues from not driving it regulary.

Also you can't look at it and tell the difference, but the engine is highly likely a 352 and not a 390. You can measure the stroke to find out for sure.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try to post some photos, it may help. The truck has had a lot of work done to it. It has an early 70's steering column and selector. (No green dot.) The truck has had a number of different engines, The previous owner replaced the longblock with the 390. The trans shifts pretty good. I think I will change the fluid and filter, just to be safe.

I'll second John's welcome with my own - Welcome!

As for your transmission, the best way to ID it is to look at the pan shape, and count the number of bolts.

One quick way to eliminate a number of possibilites without crawling under the truck is this: Look at the bellhousing. Does it bolt to the transmission, or is it one cast piece?
If it is one piece, it is most likely a C-6. If it is separate from the transmission, it is not a C-6. C-6 transmissions are a one-piece case, bellhousing and all.

To alleviate the problem, I would drop the pan and change the fluid and filter. That may - or may not - solve the problem. If the transmission is in bad shape, it may bring it down completely, so be prepared fo rthat possibility.

Good luck, and again, Welcome!
