Ignition Question

How long should it take to replace an actuator in the ignition of a 88 Bronco?

The repair guy says 4 hours, but that seems like it is high for a Ford trained mechanic.

If your talking about the actuator rod in the steering column than 4 hr does sound a bit long, but I forgot the exact procedure to replace it. I am sure if you search around you will find the tech article that shows the easy to replace it, and IIRC it didn't look as though it should take 4hrs.

I just replaced the same part about two weeks ago. It is a cast part that attaches to the rod at the top. They had two in stock. The guy at ford said they breack all the time. In any case, I did it in about two hours. If I did it again right now, it would take about 40 minutes. Its just hard to figure our how to get it out. And I dont have any speacial tools.

yeah they are really bad about breaking. the one in my 91 bronco broke about a month ago. its really not an extremely hard part to replace. the time the mechanic told you could also be a flat rate charge instead of an actual time incriment

I think some enterprising parts maker could make a fortune selling a billet aluminum or even a cast aluminum version of that part. Anything beats the pot metal they are made out of.

He is quoting flat rate instead of actual time. I would say that it about a 2 hour job at most and one that isn't too hard for the typical shadetree mechanic.
