Scan Tool?

Hey group, quick question. Where can a guy pick up a scan tool for his 6.0 PSD, how much do they cost and what brand seems to be the most helpful? I am seeing a bunch of guys on the site talking about codes that there truck is throwing and I would like to get one so as to be more informed about how the diesel is running. Thanks guys.

I have a Snap-On one that I got on sale for about $450. I think they are around $700
now. You can by an inexpensive one (as long as it is for OBDII) that will read and clear codes, from any chain auto parts store (Kragen/Schucks/CheckerAutoZone/PepBoys) for $100.00-$125.00.

Hahaha!!! Hey Maxium I almost forgot about my SCT!! 2005 FORD, buy one from SCT, they are about $350.00, are called Excalibrator II's, and they have a great benefit, they read codes, clear them, and make your truck haul a$$!!!

LoL, thanks socalsuperduty03, good idea but im one of those guys who is a little nervous about a tuner ( the three of us get together and hang out sometimes...lol). But do the auto zone scanners work, or will they read only two of 150,000 possible codes? if the 100-150 ones work, i think i will go with that unless there is some kind of drawback that a more expensive scan tool dosent have. And the last thing is, will any scan tool that reads OBD2 work on my truck or do i need a diesel specific tool? Thanks guys.

2005,
Any OBDII Scan tool will work, as long as it isn't some dinosaur. I think the $150 ones will be just about anything you would ever need.

Nobody is twisting your arm to load a program it is just a feature tuners have. Scangauge makes a nice little item that they call the 3 in 1 system. It acts as a digital gauge, trip computer and code reader.

For those of you with scangauges, do you find that the trip computer duplicates what the lie-o-meter tells you on fuel economy?
