Unhappy Turbo problem (Maybe???)

Here we go guys, I'll try not to bore you too much.I'm haveing problems with my 03 Western Hauler (F-350) again,After having the usual puking coolant problems, and replacing the head gasket's with hypermax 500 and ARP's, and welding up the ends of the EGR cooler I figured the all of my problems were solved so off to work I go...HaHaHa...It seemed I am having turbo problems, When I'm traveling down the road like down a small hill and the engine coast's with the boost gage reading 0, when I start to climb the next(small hill as I live in Michigan) the boost only comes up to around 6 to 8 PSI. it's not a problem empty but with a load I'm down to 40 MPH for up too 2 min. Then all of a sudden it's like a switch being turned on and I get my full boost and off we go. Talk about irratating to say the least.
Now this doesn't happen all of the time. so I was thinking stuck turbo? and this site has the answer.. clean the turbo... why didn't I think of that? so off to the pole barn again to remove the turbo and clean as per instructions. Replaced VGT solinaid and the EBP sensor at 140.00 at my local rip me off stealership and I should be in buisness again... HaHaHa. yesterday I went to Missippi with a 8000lb trailer.Things were going along just fine till the dreaded state of Tn. you know, the one with all of the hills??? It started to get warm out 85 to 90 then all of a sudden it started again...It almost seems like it goes to a no fuel situation because I don't get any smoke out of the exhaust when this happens... Can someone fix this before I don't have any hair left to pull out.. Thanks In advance...Dan.

check the nipple on the intake where the map sensor hose connect to and make sure the hose is good. also check your cac tube boots for leaks. still could be a boost issue. also make sure your intercooler is not leaking/busted.

Thanks, I haven't checked the nipple yet, but I do know the CAC tubes are good. when it works, it works good. 25 to 35 lbs boost and 70 MPH up even the steapest hills, so I can guess that the intercooler should be fine also...

Am I correct in assuming that if a turbo was sticking, I would have black smoke out of the exhaust? and if not, it should be related to something controling the VGT????

66,
My truck had the exact same issues, however sometimes when the turbo 'woke up' it would puke some black smoke, but not all the time. I had already had a turbo and VGT replaced, so I hooked up a VDR from the dealer, and then a PDA, and found my EBP baro reading out whack. Replaced EBP sensor and the three wire harness and connector. Did your truck get the connector and harness replaced along with the sensor? Also, I don't know what kind of elevation you were pulling, but you could always check the baro readings of the MAP and BPS sensors to make sure they are in the ballpark.

thanks Tim, no did not change that wire harness, and it seems that elevation doesn't make a difrance. Happens here in mi as well as Tn. Maybe it's time for the stealership to try. I know that they are just gonna replace things just like me but at a much higher cost...

I'm not positive, but I think there could be a later flash for your truck. I'm not sure when the 05e15/06e17 (depends on yr. model of your truck) flashes came out, but they are supposed to help prevent/remedy some of these issues. One of our most knowledgeable tech can help you or tell you about the flash dates. Sometimes it's on a sticker under your hood if it's been recalibrated also.

I don't know if you can check online, but you can call a FoMoCo dealer with your v.i.n. and they can let you know.

well, just checked the nipple on the intake for the MAP sensor hose, was dirty but not blocked. the rest of the hose is good also. decided to pull the EGR valve and clean it thinking it might be hanging in the open position and causing problems. there again, dirty but not unexpectedly bad. cleaned and reinstalled...now I have to wait till mext week to haul something and see if anything helped or not...(don't think so) anybody know of a good place to take this thing in the Grand Rapids, Mi area that is worth a @#$%^... every dealership around here says that they have diesel tech's but not proven it by me...even a shop that is not a dealerhip would be fine with me, just as long as they know this thing... Thanks again, Dan
