Broken Dipstick

My oil dip stick broke off on my 7.3 N/A.

Has anybody had this problem before?

The dip stick broke right at the point were the flat part joins the handle and the flat part is now stuck in the dip stick tube.

No luck fishing it out with a pair of needlenose pliers. It is down atleast 5 inches.

I just hope I don't end up having to remove the starter or something like that to get the new tube back in. I guess I will look at it on the weekend.

If you can get the tube out intact, just buy the stick. It can be pretty tricky getting that tube in if you buy it new, took a lot of monkeying around to get it done on the old man"s 84. I wish it was as easy as undoing the nut and taking it loose, but they are like the gas motors, almost press fit into the block. I highly recommend taking the batery cable loose before trying to put the tube in, can make quite the pretty arcing if you short the cable...

Thanks,

Very good point on the battery cable. 2,000 CCA can give you quite a bit of fireworks.

And that nice flash will be the end of your tube and the new dip stick if it is in there.

There is an O ring on the dipstick tube where it goes into the block to keep it from leaking.

Well I got it fixed.

To pull the old tube is easy, disconnect the batteries and remove the one 3/8" screw that holds the tube onto the rockercover bracket and pull the tube out.

Rather that spend $70 on a new tube and dipstick I brazed it back together. It now is stronger that before.

I also went to my other truck and brassed it before it has a chance to break.

If you ask me the factory dipstick design could use this improvements, especially for guys like me who check there oil probably more than most people do.

Getting the tube back in is a two-man job. Dad helped me guide the tube from the top and I went underneath with a long scredriver to guide it in the hole on the block. There is just enough room between the starter and the hole to see what you are doing. The only other way I could have done it is to pull the starter motor.

Thanks for all comments and suggestions.

Thanks for everones help
