What would be a good gearing choice for a 1966 ford f-100. I want ALOT of torque but I want some speed also. It is a daily driver. I was thinking around 3:83? or something along those lines any suggestions?
Thanks
my 66 sb 428 c6 with 3.50 trac-loc i find to be a little low. i am not comfortable running at 3000rpm constantly to keep up with the traffic on the highway. i like the stoplite gig but i think i would be more comfortable with 3.25 or 3.00 instead of the 3.50's for highway driving. tires are quite tall also. i would guess my gas mileage to be 5-8 depending on how hard i hit the holley. just my take. jim.
David, In 66 the 352 and auto came with 3.00 gears. Plenty of power with some mpg. You might have to have a tire store card to run a gear like that you were thinking about, they wouldn't last long.

66F100s Rule
In the cool still quite of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
i run 4.10 in my 65 with a 352/c6, it runs about 3000 at 70 mph, take off is great, and it still has enough top end to keep ,up with just about anything. i also run 33" tall tires. depending on your tire size i would say a 3.73 would be a good all around gear.

John, that 3000rpm at 70mph was passing one of those police radar traps they use up here in WI. they just tell you how fast you are going, i was doing 70mph past one at 3000rpm. remember i have 33" tall tires.

John, I think he is about right. I have 32.5" tall tires, with 4.88 gears, and turn 3025 rpm at 60 mph. Calculated and confirmed with my new electronic S-W tach.
If you run the math (1 revolution is 3.14 times the tire height, 60 mph is 5280 feet in 1 minute, etc) you should find that 33" = 8.64 feet per revolution, 70 mph = 6160 feet per minute, thus 6160/8.64 = 713 wheel rpm times 4.10 gears = 2923 driveshaft rpm with a 1:1 high gear, plus a little for converter slippage.
I have a 352 .030 over factory 4spd. 3.73posi. would like some input on what you thing a good tire size would be for performance and mileage in a 70 series tire.
I have a 262-6, and the Spicer 60 (Dana), has 4.10 ratio. I have no idea what rpm I would pull at 70 mph, but I rarely drive it that fast. Too loud. but the power is awesome. It really handles and drives so much better with a few hundred lbs in bed. I have had 1800 lbs of soil in the bed.
It gets pretty bad milage for a 6 cyl, with one barrel carb. Probably about 8 mph over including town.
Is that about right?
