C6 dipstick o-ring?

My RV barfs a puddle of tranny fluid after it's been parked a while. It's an 83 E-350 460 4bbl C6 auto. It looks like it's coming from where the dipstick tube enters the tranny body. I understand there's an o-ring on the bottom of the tube, and hope someone can give me a size so I can have the replacement ready before pulling the tube out and leaving it out while I run all over town for a replacement?
Is it normal for the TC to drain enough fluid back into the pan to fun out that high up the case?

Go to any transmission shop or Ford dealer.
Ask for a filler tube "O" ring.

i work in a tranny shop and we just use silicone. you will want to drain enough fluid out of the pan so that the silicone will seal up.

Thanks, guys. Stopped off at the local Ford dealer, since he was closer than any tranny shop. $1.10 for an o-ring, but the parts guy comes out with a pkg of 4. He says "Looks like they've changed things, and I'm not breaking open the pkg to give you one and I'm not changing the invoice to bill you for 4 when you only want 1. So, Merry Christmas."

Anybody need an o-ring for the cost of postage? :-)

You might think silicone is a mickey mouse job, but when your new o-ring gets hard and starts leaking you'll be glad Ford sold you 4 o-rings.

Hey - wasn't me that denigrated silicone! Besides, turns out the partsman pulled the wrong pkg and I ended up making another run - traded the pkg of 4 for a single o-ring of the correct size and got my $1.10 back for my troubles.

I just want to clearify that we use a new o-ring and silicone. This is just an added little security. Sorry if you thought I was aming that toward you. Just a little sarcasim.

In many instances silicone will upset a sensor which will disrupt a computer controlled vehicle.

There are places where silicone is used.
It does not belong in a transmission.

Just for your info, all auto manufactors use silicone on there cars and trucks in place of o-rings and gaskets. I work in a tranny shop and see this everyday. The number one cause of tranny failure is failure to maintain your trans., not because you sealed a dipstick tube with a new o-ring and silicone.

So wrong my friend.
I spent 47 years in the transmission field and have rebuilt thousands and thousands of transmissions.

Yes some do use silicone. Mainly on a pan gasket.
However standard transmissions do use silicone.
But the majority of automatic transmissions do not and those that do use a special kind that is non sensor damaging and not in critical areas.

Not to get in the way of a "peeing for distance" contest, but I'm going to bet that my 83 C-6 doesn't have any sensors that would react adversely to silicone (unless that silicone happens to be installed in the rider on the pax seat) then that silicone would cause the DW to react badly, I'm sure!!!

No peeing for distance, just stating facts.

True your vehicle may no have sensors that would be upset by the use of silicone.

It is a cheap shoddy repair in my estimation.

On one hand, if I took it to a shop and they smeared some silicone around the dipstick and charged me an hour of labor, I would agree with you completely - shoddy repair. One the other hand, I simply put a new o-ring on the tube and reinstalled it. I did ponder putting a little silicone around the tube as a "belt and suspenders" approach, but first, the original o-ring lasted for 23 years and 58,000 miles before leaking - I'll take my chances that the new one will perform as well. Secondly, I didn't want to go through the contortions required to put silicone on it.

Finally, thanks for everyone's input - I'm not a tranny mechanic, just an average joe that doesn't mind working on old junk - and it's a good thing, too, because that pretty much sums up the status of all my "stuff" :-)
