I'm wanting to do a gear swap and diff change. I also need my truck for work, so that i could have little down time as possible, I was going to source a rear end from a salvage yard, so i could rebuild, then swap it up under the truck, and wanted to make sure i got all my T's crossed and I's dotted so to speak. I have a 89 f150 with the 8.8, 3.55 gears and 33" tires, so i lost alot of my power to the ground. The question is, can I use an 8.8 out of any 87-91 f series ? With out messing up the abs ?
You should be able to use any 8.8 diff. The Ford Exporer uses a 31 spline 8.8 with 3.73 gears. The gears are fully compatible with any 8.8 rear. If the Trucks use a 31 spline axle(i'm pretty sure it does) the carrier will also work for you. You should also be able to retain you ABS with no problems.

In order to be able to just swap the whole axle in, you'd need to have one from an 87-96 F150. The exploder housing is narrower and the bolt pattern is different on the axles, but as 12secondstang said, the carrier and gears will interchange.
yeah, regearing is the main idea for sure, i want my power back!! Having to rev it up as high as i do to get the tires to spin is a pita.
I also think I'm gonna go with the trac-lok diff to get a little more traction to the ground.Plus I can take the opportunity to freshen up the whole rear with new bearings, seals, ect.,ect., since I'm running the bigger meats.
