Heat/AC Fan

The HVAC fan that sits in the dash near the passenger air bag in my 99 Ranger has been "buzzing" for the last few days, like it's about to quit. Advice?

The first thing I think of when you hear someone talking about a buzzing blower fan is leaves/trash/etc in the blower, try pulling it out and cleaning. Also hook the blower up to a 12v supply while it's out, just to make sure there isn't a problem.

Thanks for the response. Leaves sounds totally reasonable as the "sound" started right after TS Ernesto kicked our butts here and scattered leaves EVERYWHERE. How do I check the blower?? I lack serious confidence when messing with the car! thanks again.

The blower motor actually behind the area of the glove compartment door so it does sound like there could be something in it. Removing the glove box should be as simple as pinching in the sides and removing the screws at the bottom. That will probably allow you to hear even better if it is coming from the blower motor. I've never removed the motor in mine but I've seen it and it does not appear to be difficult. However, my truck does not have passenger side SRS airbag and I have a little concern about whether on your truck that module is potentially in the area where you would need to work to get the blower motor out. If you lack confidence in working on the truck then you don't want to be in the area of an airbag module trying to work on something else. There is a set procedure for disarming the SRS starting with disconnecting the negative cable on the battery. If you search the forum you will see other threads talking about both removal and the potential dangers. Maybe some others in the group can tell you a little more about the positioning of the module and the blower motor and how much of a concern it is. But at least you should be able to get the glove box off to get a better listen to where it is coming from. Then if you decide you don't want to work in that area you'll be able to tell a technician more specifically. Good Luck.

It's easy, your working under the hood.
