Here in Sask they use sand mixed with pink stuff. I believe it is the tallings from the potash mines. It is cheap. All I know is if you follow the sanding truck in the winter your windsheild and truck are all white when it drys. Head to car wash right away it will start to eat your truck. Sometimes it looks like there is no sand, just pink potash coming out of those trucks. I'm surprised we don't have more vehicles rusting away from the salts here.
The pink stuff is potash waste/tailings and is many times more corrosive than salt. The salt will neutralize once it`s wet and dries but potash waste dosen`t seem to. It is also free or almost free so it must be very attractive to the Dept. of Highways.
Yeah the rust factor in sask over the winter really sucks. I have seen alot of rusty vehicles up in northern alberta too, I wonder if they use different stuf farther up north?
