My 1998 Explorer Sport has single leaf springs. Can I replace them with multi leaf springs? The Ford parts dept told me that I had to use the single spring and that no other multi leaf springs would fit my Explorer Sport...can't understand why I can't use an Explorer multi leaf spring...anyone have a part number for a multi spring that will fit my Explorer Sport? Thanks
based on other threads I have read here (recommend a search on leaf springs) this is a common "mod" for Sport models. The multi leaf pack from an equivalent year 4 door explorer should bolt right up to your vehicle. Keep in mind that almost all Explorers suffer from sag on the driver's side rear (fuel tank on that side) so you might want to try and get a pair of right springs to use... just my 0.02 I am sure others will contribute more.

when I did the ones on my 1997 mountaineer the cost of one set (driver's side) installed at the dealer was just about the same I payed for both sides installed at a good local spring shop. Plus, they put a better set on as I was using the vehicle to tow it has a 6 leaf pack (I think) versus the OEM 4 leaf. Just something else to consider.

You can also get an add a leaf kit, and just add some leafs to the existing springs. this is an aftermarket solution - Ford wants to just sell you more single springs, but there are black pads that are there now, and if you loosen that bracket, you can replace as many of those 4 pads you want with shorter leafs that will beef up the suspension. - their are specific kits for your year model, etc... I am considering air shocks in the rear myself too... would help for towing for sure, since it will help extend the life of the single leafs.
