i found out the hard way that my oil pan drain nut is right in the middle of the front crossmember, i found one at a wreckers for 125 (not sure if thats me pullin the motor to get the pan or if they will have it ready for me when i get there) another guy told me to get a new drain nut assembly and get a welder to place the plug farther up the pan where itll clear everything, anyone have any ideas or past troubles in this area? thanks
You can place a new drain nut in there but your going to have to pull the pan off. Reason being the drain plug needs a 1/4 plate or bung tack welded to the inside for it to thread into. The oil pan by itself is too thin to effectively engage threads. With that said, buying a brand new one off ebay, aftermarket, or even directly from Ford with the oil pump, pickup, main cap bolt, and dip stick.
If you change the oil pan, be sure to check the location of the oil pump and dipstick.
Earlier 460s had a front sump pan, with the dipstick mounted in the front timing cover.
You can put an '80s 460 oil pan on an earlier engine to move the drain back off the cross member, but you will have to relocate the oil pump pickup tube and the dipstick, as the newer pan has the dipstick in the side of the pan.
You will need:
newer oil pan
rear sump oil pump
rear sump pickup tube
crank main bearing bolt, with threaded tip for mounting the pickup tupe
pan side mounted dipstick and tube.
That Yard is trying to screw you! You can get a NEW pan, special main bolt, pickup and dipstick from FRPP or e-bay for less than 200 bucks. Add a new pump (while youre in there) and a one piece gasket and you have solved the problem.
the rebuild kit i have came with a new oil pump, i was really hoppin to stay with a front sump set up, i think ill call a local machine shop and see if they are up for brazin or weldin a new nut in a front location, thanks for the input
