transfer case servicing

I replaced the vac hubs on my 99 with the avm manuals... awsome. Now wondering about servicing the transfer case to get ready for hunting season and winter. Can the fluid be changed? How? What kind?
Any other sugestions?
Thanks guys.

The transfer case has 2 plugs, top is fill, bottom is drain (duh!), they are accessed from the rear of the unit. In some cases there is a counterbalance weight that needs to come off to see/access the plugs. It is recommended to remove the fill plug first, for 2 reasons - to be sure it comes out! and to allow air to flow into the unit as the oil is drained. The fluid is to be Mercon ATF. It is recommended to be changed every 60k miles. As long as you are doing it, I'd put in synthetic (which is what I did.)

Sound advice.

One thought on the 60K fluid change, if you take your truck offroad a lot expecially if deep mud or water change it a LOT more often, and in that instance I don't recommend running synthetic. I have stated this in another thread but I run synthetic in everything except the race truck diffs and tcase, the other vehicle rarely ever see much mud or water but the race truck see it's all it's life so I change that fluid atleast once a year and synthetic is just too expensive and that often dino fluid will work just fine.

Thanks guys, if anyone has a diagram that would be useful, there seems to be some parts on there that I am not sure what they are. There is somthing that looks like it might be a dipstick? Don't want to screw around till im sure.

Brian, there is no dipstick on the transfer case. You might be looking at the shift linkage (to engage the 4wd). You really don't need a diagram - just look at the rear of the transfer case, where the rear driveshaft comes out, and you'll see the 2 plugs. If you can't see the plugs, that means you have to remove the counterweight first, which is just a couple of bolts.

Dave, its just under 2 quarts, as I recall (more than 1 and less than 2). You just fill it up until it runs out the fill hole, and its full! I bought 4 quarts for the (manual) trans and the transfer case, and that was just right. As long as you're laying under there, do the trans also! Mine shifts a lot better with synthetic atf in the trans.

Monsterbaby is absolutely right - if you run the truck through water regularly, the trans, transfer case, and diffs need oil changed a lot more often. Cold water has an amazing ability to get into warm metal enclosures...

The counterweight looks kinda like a hockey puck. Remove that first and you will see the drain plug.

thanks guys I got it done. Once I figured out getting the balencer off. I think the dipstick I was talking about was a breather.
Thanks again.
