Anyway here goes again, http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/legal/index.html
Our oils add pack, has been carefully chosen, balanced, blended, TESTED, then CERTIFIED, that it's STABLE & it'll work as advertised & stand up to certain controlled conditions, by lube engineers who spend a lifetime at their profession.
So who do we think we are, to begin second guessing them, about whats best for our crankcase??????
The base oil/s & it's add pack are carefully chosen, balanced & blended, to be synergistic, such that the sum total, is greater than the sum of the individuals.
So if we come along, though well meaning & wanting to do something nice for our engines & dump some unkown brew into our crankase, seems to me the best we could hope for, is that it'll do no harm!!!!!
I mean if we dump some unknown chemical cocktail into our oil sump, we have no idea what's going to happen chemically, or with temperature.
We have no idea where the base oils saturation point is, for a particular additive, or even IF what we've just added, will even mix with the particular base oil & it's add pack, thats in our crankcase.
Thats right, some oils, especially synthetic oils, don't like, or won't accept some addtives & require a "carrier" oil to blend a particular additive in & then you can't add but so much, then it'll percipitate out, or cause some other unwanted result.
Some oils may be close to, or at their saturation point for a particular addtive & the extra additive we've just dumped in may push it over the top & cause that additive to percipitate out of solution & do who knows what in the engine, or it may cause some other unwanted reaction or result.
Other additives won't work together, or with a particular base oil. Or wll only work together in certain concentrations.
SO, having said all that, I don't know why we continue to fall for all these "Snake Oil" adds, or just dismiss them lightly.
Why would we suppose, some unkown business, or some person, would know more, or have some secret brew, that a additive manufacturer & lube enginer in a multi million dollar facility, spending a lifetime studying additives & formulations, doesn't alrady know about?????
There is nothing "special" in Z-Max, or any other snake oil!!!!!
Their goal is to create doubt in our minds. To cause us to believe our oil manufacturer was so cheep, he left out the very thing we need for our lube job, or they know some secret no one else knows & they are the only ones that can provide it in their product.
Go to the link I posted above & scroll down trough the Govt's litigated results, of all the witches brew of additives, including Z-Max, (close to the bottom), & a few bolt on hoaxes too!!!!!
The govt has taken many of them to court & challenged them to prove their advertized claims. Guess who won!!!!!
I suppose one could surmise, ignorance is bliss!!!!! lol

Kurt, when you say something like that, you are not writing it correctly. If I might be of some assistance to you, you should have said:
"Because he's making 3off of it, maybe?"
1964 4X4, is at least asking a question, and I give him credit for that. However, 1964 4X4, all quality, certified oil has the correct amount of additives blended with base stocks, as needed. My only excpetion, is if you have a worn, loose, oil burner engine. In that case, using a heavier SAE API oil, would be your best course of action. Use a quality oil, and follow OCI's with a new oil filter at every change.
