I have a freshly converted 390 (from a 360) my question is how many quarts of oil should i add to a 390 that has never been started to be at a safe level for starting?
I added 5 and the stick is reading high. is it truly high or is it just because the is nothing in the filter etc.
Really? I have a HV pump in mine, and I always ran 5.5 quarts. Of course, I'm also using a larger than stock oil filter.
I have been told you should run 6 with a HV pump. I don't know personally if it is required or not. I run 6 in mine, but I have the big oil filter, windage tray and a HV pump. Maybe I am doing it wrong??

I dont know but I always poor about 1/3 of a quart into my filter prior to installing it and wet the seal with fresh oil the hand tighten it. I heard tell "that it can create issues with it empty" never seen it as I've always done it this way.
My main concern with overfilling it (that's what you're doing when you put 6 quarts in a 5 quart pan) is that the oil level could cause the crank throws to whip the oil on odd angles or under acceleration. This forces air into the rod bearings... not good.
I'd say, add 5 quarts, break in the cam (since this is a new build), drain, change filter, refill with 5 quarts, run it for a couple minutes, turn it off, wait 2 minutes, and check the level. Add a little bit at a time until it's at the top of the full range on the dipstick. If you have 6 quarts or more at that time, fine. But dont go over the full mark. Oh, and be sure you're on flat level ground when doing this too.
Well I guess I was wrong after all. LOL Thanks for the info rusty70f100. I thought I had read on here somewhere to run 6 quarts with a HV pump because of the oil pooling in the head and not getting back down to the pickup fast enough. Glad you straightened me out. I am getting ready to change mine after I get it in the truck so I will try the thing you wrote above. I know it will take more than 5 but I don't think it will take 6. The windage tray adds the height of another gasket and the thickness of the tray itself. Thanks again!!
