Addressing

Does any one know the ins and outs of city style addressing? If you live 0.1miles from the intersection (according to the GPS) and the county you live in is based on 5.28feet....how do I live at 220 Third Street?

On edit I found this..... 0.01 miles = 52.8 feet
So maybe it should be based on 52.8 feet instead of 5.28 feet.
Also if you live a mile out, your number is based on 1???, etc.

some cities/towns start in one corner and work higher in 2 directions.

some start in the middle and work higher in 4 directions.

In most places Ive driven usually the first number of the address come before thew actual crossroads
ie:the 200 block is between 1st st - 2nd st or 1 ave - 2 ave

or depending on long the street is and how high the addressing goes it can be confusing.

Up here we have the corner of town method ... working the numbers higher going North & West.

It depends on the municipality.

I am sure that it is city-style (e9-1-1) based addressing from road to road. I know that mine can't be based on my "2" being second block because I am not in the second block. I am still very confused and need answers anyone.

Would this help any?

The road segment length used was 52.8 feet (1/100th of a mile, 5,280 feet) for two addresses—one address on the left- and one on the right-side of the road. This length is what determines a residences address as you progress along a road. This means that an address a half mile on the left side of the road would have an address of 49 and on the right side, 50.

Since the first block is usually the 10's block, the second block = the 100's, the third block = the 200's etc, I'd say you live in the fifth house from the corner of 3rd and 3rd. ??

I have seen a few streets that use increments of 2 but it doesn't sound like you do...

Our addresses start with numbers from 1 to 99 between; say 1st avenue to 2nd avenue.

Then the next set of numbers start from 100 to 199; between 2nd avenue to 3rd avenue; and so on.

However the avenues here start with 2nd avenue.

We don't have a 1st or 13th avenue.

But we do have a 1st and 13th street.

Our numbered avenues (2nd to 48th) go from east to west; but our numbered streets (1st to 12th) start from north/east to south/west, then from 13th street to 30th street head south.

Some of our street address start from north to south while others start just the opposite, from south to north.

And others start from east to west and west to east.

There's no rhyme or reason to our address system.

our address have no sense whatsoever. some streets had all the houses and lots built at the same time, so all is in order, odd on one side, even on the other.
then you go 1/4 mile away to a different development, and the houses were lined up in number order. down one side to the end , then back up the other side.
and then you have the old roads, where there is no pattern to house numbers at all. #471 is in between #25 and #94

on my street, the house next to me is #89. mine is #101, and on the other side is #103
across the street, in ascending order, is #74,#85,#106,#89,and #93.

it makes being an emergency responder tedious at times.

So how do you think this translates in the GPS system vs addresses that the OP was about ?

well Dennis, i know that gps addressing in our town don't work.
and to add to what i posted before, i was just reminded of another of our quirks by a first aid call. we have multiple streets with the same name(almost)
as an example.
Gordon street is the entrance to cheesequake state part, and has an age restricted community on it.
Gordon road is 1/2 mile west, in a development.
Gordon way is 1/2 mile east, and has a senior housing building on it.

east-west harbor way is 3 blocks from north-south harbor terrace.

bayway drive runs east-west off of north-south bayview drive

spring valley road is 3/4 mile away from spring hill road.
we just had an accident on spring valley. the ambulance drove up and down spring hill twice before calling headquarters for address confirmation.

union hill road is 1/4 mile away from union valley, but in 2 different towns. but the people that live on the roads do not know what town they live in.

That's it! Do away with addresses, and dawn the family crest on the front of your house (castle).
