Automotive Intelligence

I recently turned 16 and I have pretty much no automotive intelligence. I mean, I know a few basic things about cars, but compared to you guys, I know nothing. What I was wondering is how did you guys get so smart with automotives? Did it just come with time and experience or what? I figure some of you guys went to school, but what about the rest of you?

I learned a lot from just trial and error and also picking my Dad's brain. I will say I probably learned about 50% of the current knowledge I have just from reading on this forum.

I've always just taken things apart to see what makes them go! However, before I had my own things, I practiced on my Dad's things, which I don't recommend! Poor Dad, rest his soul!

Experience is a biggie. Some people are book smart about automotive stuff, but can't utalize it when it comes to the garage. Example: Bill has a buddy Dan, with infinate knowledge of his Cummins Diesel, everything from "I have this problem" "well this is exactly whats wrong" to every performance mod for the best price..but he had to have Bill put his new clutch in.

So the way I see it, there are 2 types of automotive knowledge. Book/knowledge from reading and hands on knowledge. Some people can tell you how to make a 302 put out 400 horses, others can wrench your 302 to put out 400 horses. Some can do both! ...or some people can tell you what a camshaft does to a "T", others can install one but just have a general concept of what a cam does.

Give it time, work on cars and trucks, read this websites forums, it has great examples of trial and error, problem fixes, modifications, what parts are good or bad ect. Howstuffworks.com is a good site for a beginer to learn about engines, tranny's differenials, and automotive stuff.

Buy service manuals for what you own. Buy some tools and get at it.

pretty much what everyone else has said. growin up on a farm helps out a little to. you learn how to do things on a farm, with what you have cause you need it. lol might not make since to you, but yall that have ever lived/worked on a farm know what im talkin about.
i guess havin it in your blood isnt bad either (grandpa can build a trailer to whatever specs you want and never draw a thing. jsut sit down , order the axles, etc. and get to work. ) he can also rebuild justabout any older tractor there is, or tell you whats wrong with out ever seein it.
