Transmission shifting problem
I have a 95 Escort that is my wifes winter beater. Last Year I had trouble with it not shifting out of first gear. I changes the fluid and filter and it got her thru the winter. I use it once a week in the summer to keep it going and no sitting well the problem came back. This time I flushed out the fluid thru the cooler lines. Now it was better but it started up again. Now this car has 140,000 on it and the fluid was crappy but I would not say burnt. Is this something that terminal or just something sticking? It seems like something that is sticking cause when it works it runs quite well.

I don't know much about 'Scorts or the auto tranny in them, but a buddy of mine has a 96 that was hanging in 1st with a delayed upshift. It just so happened that his neighbor works for a major tranny rebuilder. The fix, although he was warned it may not be permanent, was a band adjustment, IIRC. Seems to me this was like 40-50,000 miles ago and no real problems since. And yes, it's an over 100,000 mile car.
