I have a 91 302 with ss Ford headers and soon to install a Bassani Y with the 3" cat. My question is , has anyone run a splitter off the back of the cat, going to duals with them exiting just forward of the rear tire. Would this be too loud not using a muffler at all and any other ill effects. My idea is 2 3" pipes within a polished rectangular stainless steel band much like a Lightning exhaust?
Exiting in front of the rear wheels has been done, not sure about the dual output or splitter after the cat. Personally, I'd never open up to a PAIR of 3" pipes. To much loss of backpressure especially for a truck. The tips wouldn't be a problem but I would go no bigger than 1.5" on the dual portions of the pipe. Just an opinion, I've never tried it but I do know that its the backpressure issue that keeps the Bassani and other systems (cat-back and complete) from being any larger than 3". Divide that over TWO pipes and your start dropping backpressure in a hurry. As for the noise level, well no muffler and in FRONT if the rear wheels... it could be. Its really a matter of personal taste and/or what the local constabulary deems appropriate.

My truck has the bassani header with their off road y-pipe, then I continued the 3" single with a 40 series delta flow flowmaster then shot it out the side before the rear tire on the pass. side.
It sounds great and looks good.
I have '90 305 with Bassani headers, their y-pipe with the off-road cat, 3" in and out dynomax super turbo mufflfer and tail pipe behind the wheel. Mine sets up an AWFUL drone at any reasonable highway speed, so bad I'll have to buy another muffler unless someone can tell me a different way to solve the problem. The truck is not comfortable to drive at freeway speeds, though it sure preforms noticeably better. I'd think twice before I rigged it without any muffler as you won't be happy if it sounds anything like mine.
Mabe someone can tell both of us how to break the drone. I'd like to know.
I drive 400 miles every two weeks. Between the exhaust and the tires it's quite a roar. I use earplugs and turn up the tunes. I have used noise canceling headsets also. But, I ware them all the time (I'm a pilot), so that gets old to.
