Smoking Steering Column
My fiancee has a 99 Ranger.
She noticed that there was smoke coming from the steering column the other day.
She said she had the turn signal on when the smoke started.
Apparently it hasn't happen before and only one other time since.
I am thinkin it might be the blinker sending unit/relay...
What do yall think?

Sounds like the multifunction switch (blinker, wipers and what not). Pull the covers on the steering column and look for anything obviously burned. That's the good place to start. And since it happened when she turned the blinkers on, that indicates it's more than likely the multifunction switch. Once you get in there it can be an assortment of problems, bad ground, too much current draw, etc. But find the burn marks first.

I had the multifunction switch replaced on my 99 Ranger, under this program, in the spring of 00.
My letter doesn't have any exparation date listed for the program.
It also said you didn't need the letter to have the work done.
The program was to fix a "phantom" windshield wiper problem, they would self activate!!!!
So call to check & see if this program repair has been done on your VIN# vehicle, if not, perhaps your having windshield wiper problems too, RIGHT!!!!
