Hello All
I am a new owner of a 2006 f350xlt crewcab shortbed, and I also have a 97 psd that i run 1540 motor oil in. I have heard mixed answers as far as what guys are running in their 6.0L. I'd like to continue to use the rest of my drum of 1540 castrol oil that I got for my 7.3L. so that I don't need two different drums. the manual says for anything over 30 degrees, use the 1540, but under that, use the 10w30.
how many of you just run 10w30 all year long, or `15w40 all year long.
and how many of you swap between warmer and colder temps.
our temps here in NJ can get in the teens in the winter sometimes, but not much colder than that. would i be ok to just run 1540 all year long, just like i have always done in my 7.3?
I've had good used oil analysis using Rotella 5w-40 synthetic year round with 5000 mile change intervals and using an Oilguard bypass with 10,000 mile changes.
My father is retired now, but he had been a truck driver for 40 years and towards the end of his career, the company he worked for, was hauling motor oil for castrol. I asked him if he could get me a deal on a drum of 1540, and he checked into it, and said yes.
My old drum of rotella was running out and so for about 60 cents a qt and his price for the oil, I couldn't say no. It's nice because I know I always have oil, i hate buying it by the qt at 3-4 bucks or higher a qt. I am not sure if anyone can order it in a drum from them or not.
Started out with motorcraft 10-30 switch to mobil 5-40 at 5000 miles and use oil year around changing at 5-6000 miles.Temps range from -20 towing in winter to 90's in summer.
I thought about switching from 15 -40 to 10 -30 in the winter, but last winter I was at a cabin and it got to 47 below 2005 6.0 with 15-40 started right up. I'll probably stick with 15-40. Thank you stanadyne though, no gelling and that was with #2.
I hope that your drum of Catrol 15W-40 is rated for diesels and at least has CI4 API ratings on it? It may be a good oil, but the 6.0L motor is harder on oil than the 7.3L motor was and there have been improvements in motor oil technology since your purchase of your drum???
What is the API service rating on your drum - CH, CH4, CI, CI4 or CI4+... as the latest diesel oil rating is CI4+ for best protection!!!!
Not until October it isn't (all brands)... so it is not yet available unless some fleet people get it early? But people like us do not yet have acess to CJ4 oil.
But yes, when available, CJ4 will be the newest diesel rated oil spec with API certification.
Here is a cut and paste from the rotella.com website regarding their CJ4 spec'd oil... other brands will obviously have their own timetable, but October is the official launch of API certifed CJ4 motor oil.
"The API CJ-4 Shell ROTELLA®T motor oil will initially be available in bulk and drums beginning July 1st and in quart, gallon and pail packages beginning October 15th. Shell plans to continue to have its API CI-4 Plus Shell ROTELLA T motor oils available in bulk and drums beyond the introduction of the new API CJ-4 motor oils to meet customer demand."
