Cleaning the intake manifold
Anyway I removed the throttle plate assembly from my 3.0 in order to inspect it and see what kind of crap had accumulated in there. It didn't look that bad, the inside of the manifold was covered in this brownish varnish that looked like oil or gas but wouldn't wipe off with a rag. I ignored it, but I did notice that the EGR inlet was getting pretty cruddy with soot.
I remember from the tech sticky that the throttle has some special coating that you're not supposed to touch or the Ford engineers will come over and try to sell you Amway products.
But what about after the throttle plate, would it be okay if I doused the inside of the intake manifold with carb cleaner (making sure I wipe up excess of course) so that I could clear out the EGR port? Is the inside of the intake manifold delicate as well?
Is a large pipe cleaner my best bet here and/or canned air?
If it's metal, maybe I'd try a O2 safe "throttle body" cleaner.
Be careful what you spray into the EGR too, lest it's diaphragm be damaged.
Your Ford dealer should know which chemicals are safe to use. Would be interesting to hear what they have to say.
The EGR will be removed during this cleaning anyway so the diaphram won't be harmed.
