Hi all. I have an 85 full size bronco with a 4.9L 300 carbureted engine. There are no emissions componants installed. I working on putting all the components back on. It does have the computer installed under the dash with the full wire harness going through the firewall. There is a yellow wire running the length of the harness. at the end of the yellow wire is a round red rubber peice that says"fusable link". Coming out of the rubber peice is a red wire with an electrical eyelet. From a diagram I have, it shows a yellow wire going from the computer to the starter relay. It does not show the fusable link. I'm wondering, is this the main power wire for the computer?
Another question. My distributor has a electric advance not a vacuum advance. If the cumputer is not hooked up, that means that the distributor advance is not working, correct? By the way, the bronco was last driven on the road 9 years ago.
Thanks. Bill
Ok, first answer, yes, the YELLOW wire with the fusible link IS the main power feed for the computer. The fusible link is there to protect the computer from shorts and spikes just like a fuse or circuit breaker would.
Second answer, correct again, the TFI (Thick Film Integrated) ignition module gets its power from the EEC power relay which is what the YELLOW wire with the fusible link feeds. Without power from the relay the module does not control spark advance hence the engine runs at "base timing" regardless of RPM or load on it.
