amsoil question

I have been running the heavy duty diesel amsoil syn oil in my truck for years now, also my tranny/tc/diffs are running syn... i have noticed that some of you guys dont like amosil, why?? I have found the stuff to be awsome. I guess my question is what do you guys recomend for syn, and what baout oil filters? If this has been addressed before please feel free to smack me in the right direction. I am new here and I am trying to find out what others are using.

BTW i Have a 2000 lariat crew cab, with some mild perf mods......

Usually, it's overpriced and overhyped.

I have found the stuff to be awsome.
Yes, with a post count of 2, no less.

OK, so what exactly "awsome" means?

I guess my question is what do you guys recomend for syn, and what baout oil filters?
Purolator or MC for filters. For oil, I normally buy whatever name brand is on sale, or get MC oil from WalMart. Don't use pure sysnthetic (exc. gear oil/ATF) because I think it doesn't worth the premium for my use.

Thanks guys, but your post count comment doesnt have anything to do with the fact that have put 140K on the truck, bought it with .09 miles on it, and as my post says I have used the stuff and like it, but i was asking your opinions. my tranny shifts better ( i pull several things including a fully loaded four place horse trailer and gear). It's quiter, and I change my oil about every 40k and its always very clean.

xtrford,

how much do you pay for the dino stuff you get?

First, I recommend you to do a search on Amsoil in this forum. You'll get more than enough hits, and some interesting reading.

Second, just because your truck runs fine with a given oil, that doesn't mean it can't run just as well with a different, but cheaper oil. Objectively measuring how good a given oil is a little tricky. You can definitely do an UOA (fairly easy and cheap) or do a dyno test (not so cheap or easy).

For the record, my truck is past 190k on cheap oils and 5k changes, and a single ATF change around 130k. (I'm planning another one real soon, though) Runs fine, no smoke though uses a little oil (mostly leaks, it seems) and the tranny works fine, too.

dauntless, the Amsoil product is good, the company ethics in advertizing is about as low life as it gets. They make incredible and blantantly wrongful claims as to the virtues of the product. Again, the oil is good, the advertizing is slimmy. But I have to take issues with one of your claims. After 40,000 miles, you are changing the oil and it is still clean? If it is, get rid of it before you crater your engine. That is terribly wrong for an oil to go that far and still be clean. And even for an oil built for extended oil changes, 40,000 miles? I don't think so, bud. I can assure you I have seen tens of thousands of UOAs, a lot of them our recommended Amsoil, and 40,000 miles and there be anything left of the oil or the engine- don't think so. Personally, I smell a duck.

Geez guys, maybe the guy has fat fingers and typed 40k instead of 4k, or somehow got the conversion factor wrong. 4k changes I can see as being entirely realistic. Lighten up, I smell nothing except last nights dinner...

I change my oil evey 3000 miles and it's always dirty . This week I pulled the valve covers to adjust the valves and the inside is clean.I use Motorcraft oil in my trucks but I think it dosn't matter as long as you change it often enough.

I find that Amsoil makes excellent products. But, I usually avoid any of the marketing hype or BS. And, there are excellent synthetics available at wallyworld and your local autoparts stores. But, some of Amsoil's products are specific and best at what they do. I am a big fan of their ATFs, their gear oils, and MTFs. Redline is also on my recommendation list.
Concerning price, buy in bulk and hunt for a seller that doesn't overcharge.
And, most auto dealers also belong to the 'overpriced fluid' gang!

For most people any store bought mineral oil, that meets your owners manuals requirement, is plenty good for that 3k/3mo OCI. And, IMO, ANY oil filter would be good enough for 3k intervals also.

But, I am not 'most people' and I am maybe just a little environmentally pro-active.
I don't care for 3k/3mo OCIs. I usually push my oil change interval with the added insurance of the synthetic and a name brand premium or boutique oil filter.
I would never follow owners manual recommended change interval without using a synthetic. I find that cars that I service yearly, 7.5k, 10k, or with oil life monitors, end up with sludge issues using mineral oils. These owners are negligent and I usually refuse their business. Go to jippylube!

And, I would NEVER practice a non-standard oil change interval without a used oil analysis. Anyone who thinks that ANY oil or stock filter can last 25k, 50k...... is crazy.

And, with a used oil analysis, anyone that thinks their oil is clean when it is removed is having foolish thoughts.

Please feel free to provide a UOA on that 40k mile old oil. Unless there is a bypass filter, it will be an eye opener to YOU and a good laugh for the rest of us.

Here’s a good oil analysis place. They offer free test kits too. Check it out. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/index.html .
AFA oil filters- you’re not using Amsoil??? I personally like Wix and the NAPA label is WIX.
