i have an 82 fullsize bronco w/ the 300 and granny 4 spd...the last night, it started running really really poorly....like an instantaneous power loss (i couldn't get over 45 mph on the highway in 4th gear), and a constant backfire...1-2 seconds between pops.....pop pop pop....through the carbeurator....anybody that has any ideas on what the problem could be, please throw your ideas out there....it's bow season now, and I WANT MY BRONCO RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!
My knee jerk thought is a timing issue caused by the timing gears gone south. This I6 has timing gears inplace of a timing chain or belt. I did not want to drop this bomb shell but I did not want you getting into the back woods without a way out, or do more harm to the motor. I am guessing your motor has over 200,000 miles. Post your mileage to get a second opinion. Have a good hunt.
MAN that is a clogged fuel filter My 78 did the EXACT same thing and quit running 6 miles later(I fixed it with channel locks and a spare fuel filter though)It lost power QUICK I ended up in granny gear ideling becuase it would buck/fart/backfire if i touched the gas. I try to keep fresh fuel in it and that wix fuel filter had out 75 miles on it.
If you need to replace your fule filter I recomend you get one larger than the oem one, I believe the inlet/outlet are 5/16, get one that about 2"-2 1/2" in diameter.
I have an 84 F250 with the straight 300 and I had a problem that sounds a little like what you're describing, the electronics for the ignition is actually located in the distributor and it would get to operating temp and start failing intermittently until it finally went all the way out. Autozone will check yours at no charge. Good luck

Actually, it sounds like you sucked something up into your fuel filter resulting in an almost full blockage. A filter will fail gradually over time and shouldn't cause a vehicle to go from fully operating to dead on the side of the road in less than 10 miles though in your case at least the fix was easy!
It does indeed sound ignition or timing related. Does the engine pop when starting it? If it's popping because of timing you can tell really quick by popping the coil wire off the ignition and cranking it. It should still pop and then you'll know.
