hey guys i dont think 80 to 86 ever used a third brake light but does anyone know what year they did? im considering adding one because it seems like a good place to run a satelite radio antenna wire at the same time. im thinking ford started using the third brake light in 87. also wondering if it will fit an 80 to 86 cab?
I dont think they started using them until the 92-96 body style. I don't recall seeing them on any 87-91 trucks. You just gave me another swap to try though. I will see if the 3rd brake/cargo light from my 95 parts truck will swap onto my 85. I have a feeling I may have cut the opening a little bigger.
My truck currently has only the cargo light, and I have heard of people rewireing it to the brakes and putting a red bulb in to make it a brake light. Does your truck even have the cargo light? I can't remember if it was standard equipment, or an option. Have you thought about running the wire up into the A-pillar, or is this connected to an antennae that is mounted on the exterior of the vehicle?
Cargo lights are available at most you-pull junkyards, problem is that the gaskets tear when you try to remove the lights. Local dealer says gaskets unavailable/obselete. I had to make a gasket out of silicone rubber for mine.
A little silicone is better than a lot of rust in the cab.
I don't know how big your antennae is, but what about replacing the factory antennae with the satellite one. Would it cover the hole? If I was paying for satellite radio, I sure as heck wouldn't need my old antennae anymore.
The satelite antenna is about the size of a computer mouse, the reason i considered adding the carge light or third brake light is it looked like a great spot to run the wire in through Id rather not remove the factory antenna would prefer to kee that
