Just had my truck in the shop to be checked over because I knew there were issues with the brakes. It's a 1996 F-150 regular cab (2wd), with the rear anti-lock brakes. Basically, it needs all new brake parts (rotors, drums, shoes, etc.) on all four wheels, plus new cylinders on the back (the old ones are leaking), and the wheel seals are leaking. Imagine that...only has 185,00 miles.) The shop said it was about a 5 hour job and would run about $960. Does that sound reasonable? I've had my truck in this shop before and really trust them, but I wanted some other opinions. Keep in mind that I am NOT a Mr. Fix it...I'm not even going to attempt to do it myself. If I did, I'm sure my truck would never stop (until I ran into something!)
That sounds about right - but you would save yourself a serious chunk of change doing it yourself. Probably about $700 or so. Just something to think about. Hey, if you're close, I'll do the whole job for you for $700.
WOW....I just want to take a moment and say THANK YOU to My Grandpa and My Dad that passed these blessed mechanic genes down to me!
Sounds a bit steep BUT I'd rather pay 960 to a shop I trust than 500 to one I don't.
Like Andy said....around 260 in parts the rest is labor. Hmmmmm
700 for labor....divided by 5= HOLY SMOKES
Ask them if they have to use their parts or if you can get them and have them just install.
Hourly rate around here at the most expensive shop is $65 most are around $45
Shops will typipcally make about 50% profit on the parts they sell you, too. In other words, if a part costs $50, they will sell it to you for $100. This is why most shops will not install parts that you bring in. It cuts into their profit margin. Never mind safety or warranty issues, it's about money.
Sounds like a pretty decent deal for what you need done... I always used to tell people that wanted to do their own brakes that it is not only your life that you are putting at risk but eveyone elses on the road, leave it to a professional... Especially if you have absolutely no desire to do the job... Just my .02 cents though...
