I have a '95 F-150, 4.9l and 5 speed. Somewhere there is a bad connection that is making the truck hard to start.
The symptoms are: I turn the key, the starter solenoid clicks, the fuel pump starts, but no starter. The metal ring around the key is broken and rotates independently of the key, but even before that broke I began to have the starting problem.
The starter and battery are new, and I've replaced the clutch safety switch too. Sometimes it seems as if I hold the key and clutch for a second or two, it starts up, as if the voltage of a switch somewhere had to burn through oxide to make good contact.
Once the truck starts it runs fine and doesn't die on me.
First things to check are the connections to the battery. Make sure the connections are clean and tight. If you can check the other end of the ground wire (neg.). make sure it is clean and tight. Also the pos. wire running to the starter, there should be no movement in this where it connects to the starter solenoid. If all that is good then you may have a faulty starter relay. This is mounted on the right side fender with heavy wires connected to it. You could test this by bridgeing the two heavy terminals on the relay when the starter fails to run on the key. If the starter then runs you have a faulty relay.
