Saw this in Forbes magazine yesterday, Ford stock down from 30+ in 99 to 7 in 06, been going down since Bill Ford took over, G.M. is up over 30 from being down in low twenties or high teens, and Ford is going to try another new engine, wonder what this will do to them, no wonder they have delayed the 6.4 coming out, to many bugs, could be a total disaster.
The delay of the 6.4? There is NO delay. I was never intended to be put in trucks until january 07. It is all to do with new emissions regulations and NEW diesel fuel that will only be available after Oct. 15th this year. The new engine is designed (as are the new GM and Dodge diesels) to run ONLY on the new fuel. BUT....I agree that Ford is in trouble. If they don't get the new engine right they are dead. The NEW 6.4 is a remake of the 6.0. witch is fine. The problems Ford has is with the injectors and electronic contolls. The new piezio injectors are ony used in Europe at present in HIGH end vehicles and Diesels. They are not mechanical...but are much more pricise in fuel metering. If Ford is not profitable by the end of 08 bad things are going to happen. Truck sales are down 47 pecent this last quarter over all....fuel prices has a lot to do with it...and a wait and see attitude. I love Fords....they now have to oversome some issued precieved and real with the public. NOBODY wants to buy a failing car companys vehicles NO MATTER how good they are. Time will tell.
You have to love any article that posts a stock price pre 2000. Everything went down from an all time peak after 2000. What time frame was the GM stock price quoted? The contrarians might say GM is overvalued and Ford is buy now, maybe not.
Remember, the press we were brought up to believe reported the facts now has a biased agenda in many cases.
Ford and GM have made their profits on big trucks and SUV's and as noted the cost of gas has driven the market for these down. Ford sells more trucks and SUV's so their profits were hit harder.
Ford is also in some Luxury brands, bought by Nasser back in those high stock price days, that are not carrying their weight in sales.
To try to blame this on one engine is a stretch. Ford has not closed factories or laid off workers at the rate GM has but they are catching up. You can't cost cut your way to success.
I am a die ard Ford driver but the other companies have been offering newer models with better performance and features. Of course I may be part of the problem as I am still driving my 1997 Ford F150 Lariat.
O NO..I am not blaming it all on the 6.0. But...AS a fleet manager for over 25 years I see a lot of very very unhappy Ford owners of the 6.0. They are spending way too much time in the shop with recalls and fixes for the 6.0. Navastar uses the same engine in their mid size trucks will little of the same issues with injectors and electronic...but it is a deturned version as far as HP is concerned but still retains up to 620 lbs of torgue. The HP race is hurting the reliability of the V-8 Diesels from both Ford and GM. Thats why GM offers two versions of thier Duramax. One version is 520 lbs of torgue and the other with 650 lbs. My piers at GM shops accross town tell me Don't buy the 650 buy the 520.
This is a lot of rambling but its facts of life with diesels. I love the way Diesels drive but I hate the constance little issues that have come up with the Fords. Sometimes the little issues result in Engine failure. The injectors fail lieaking fuel into the crankcase causing engine failure...ITS HAPPENED A LOT WITH THE 03'S.
I am shopping for a new tuck in the next year...as we are preparring for retirement. I WANT A FORD. I am still driving a 79 at present. GOD...ITS A GOOD OLE TRUCK..LOL.
I owned an original 6.9 diesel....with 329 thousand on it. And a 7.3 my son had was good. I have a friend who owns a one tone dually and hauls trailers for Terry industries to dealers. HE has over 500 thousand on his 7.3 powerstroke. ONE turbo..and fuel pump replacement is all HE has done.
I have yet to see a 6.0 with over 150,00O on it. But then they are too new.
Just ramblings as I said.
MY IDEAL VEHICLE....FORD chassis/frame....cummins deisel....with an allison transmission. They dont make one of them do they?? LOL
O by the way.....the ford truck transmission is good...VERY GOOD..when them come out with the 5 speed....WE never see a problem....and don't let anyone kid you. The allisons are not bullet proof either. WE gm and ford service managers talk a lot. GM has a series of the allison with torque converter failures ...they just did a very good job of hidding it. UPS company bought the allison 1000 and it was NOT a good thing. Apparently GM did some short cuts to squeeze out a few more dollars and exprements with the UPS trucks...its didnt work. They recalled 3400 UPS trucks for torque converter replacement in the allison.
I hope FORD gets it right. They have a great strong truck..that hauls better with max load than anyone.
O buy the way...did you know that the ford Diesel is underrated in HP and torgue...thats why they outpull the cummings and the standard GM duramas in the magazine tests.
The 650 lbs torgue duramax has more power..but also a 22:1 compression ratio. A bomb waiting to go off...LOL
OK I am off subject....but I like to talk trucks. sorry.
