open knuckles came later on in production and generally have disc brakes for one. but the a few oher things are notable as well. the turning radius is sharper with open knuckles. ball joints last longer than trunion bearings. anyone else?
One advantage of the closed knuckle is that the parts are cheap and easier to change then the press in ball joints. Personally I think they are stronger and last longer then balljoints and hold up better in off road conditions.
