So I just bought a 2001 F-150 4x4 supercrew. Currently has tires that are 265/70 R17 and I'd like to get some bigger ones. I read the thread about tire sizing and still can't figure out what size will fit without rubbing, lifting, etc... looks like 285/70 R17 will fit? Any bigger? I am guessing it has 17" rims, if that is what R17 means...If anyone out there has the same truck with bigger all terrain tires and has NO issues with rubbing and has not had to lift his truck, I'd appreciate it if you can lemme know what size tires you have.
I have 285/75/16's on my stock '97 4x4, and it doesnt even come close to rubbing. In fact, I think I can up go to 34x11.50's without rubbing (mabey 35's with cranked torsion bars).
The 285/70/17's you suggested are the same size, and should fit without any problem.
The BFG All-Terrain is my personal favorite, though they don’t last long and are a tad noisy. I currently have BFG Rugged Trails and it's been an awesome set of tires, quiet, good grip in just about all conditions and last a long time (for me). I have about 2 years on mine and roughly 50% tread left, which works out to about 20,000-25,000 miles.
P.s. if you go with the Rugged Trail let me know how it turns out. I have 265's at the moment and was thinking about the 285's come time for new tires.
I got mine with 285/70/17 earlier in the year. Doesn't rub at all, very nice tires with BFG All-Terrain, helps with the looks dept as well. But lose approx 1 mpg overall. Not too bad, really.
We've had good experiences with our 4X4 work trucks, they all have Firestone Transforce A/T's on them. Very good wear so far. We've had them on for about 2 years on one truck and they look almost new yet. Good in the mud, rain, and snow too. We didn't have much luck with the Destination A/T's, thread wear was horrible.
Yokohoma Geolander A/T +II's are a great A/T tire. My friend has them on his Dodge Ram. Quiet, smooth, great traction on-road, and very good traction off-road to be an A/T.
Also...Winston Winner LT's. These are what my truck had on it when I got it. Same performance as the Yoko's I mentioned above...as well as longer treadlife.
I like those BFG A/T, but man those are expensive! Thanks for all the other responses, I've looked at them all, and seem like great tires. I like the aggressive look but want a decent ride also.
