I am probably gonna pick up a 2000 F250 cc sb 4x4 V10 auto tommorrow. There is 134k on the truck and 38k on a new engine( I don't know why the engine was replaced) and I was wondering what you guys think are the most important things on these trucks that a person should look at? The truck is in good shape and I think I can get this for about 8500 bucks. Is that a good deal or just an average price? Thanks in advance...
Buying a used 4x4 is risky, espeically when the motor had been replaced. If it has oversized tires, I would pass. Odds are good, that a dealership will "freshen" it up before you get to look at. Look at the transfluid, if it's fresh I would be very causious. For 8.5K I would consider it, but also expect to pay another 5-8k for up keep.
There's a certain amount of risk with any used vehicle, no matter what type it is. I too, would steer clear of a highly modified truck, whether it's a 4x4 or not, because the potential that it's been abused seems a little higher. However, just being a 4x4 doesn't necessarily mean it's been abused - a very large percentage of the 4x4 trucks on the road these days never leave the pavement, and rarely if ever see snow or ice. They're 4x4's because they're cooler, or just in case, or because resale is higher, or because that's all that was available... Granted there are more things that can go wrong with a 4x4, but it's still worth more, and if you need it - you need it (or if you want it - you want it.....). Alot of people either can't afford to, or simply choose not to, buy a new truck - but they're usually pretty well aware of the risks involved in used ones.
All that said, in this case I too would have to wonder why the motor needed replacing, but there could be any number of reasons... I'd also make sure it doesn't have a salvage title - if so try and find out why, and do your best to make sure any repairs were done right. $8500 is a darn good buy on a 2000 4x4 crew cab with 134k. If I liked it after driving it and checking it out thoroughly, I'd buy it if I had the chance.
