5.4 missing when accelerating.

Hello to all,
I am a NooBee to your forum. I did perform a search relating to my new thread and found a few topics that related but still no real answer.

Here goes: I have an 06 F150 Supercrew 4x4 5.4. When I reached 1762 miles the truck strated to miss and back fire when accelerating. Went to dealer and they keep it four days. I picked it up and when leaving dealership(1/2 mile away I noticed the same problem)I accelerated from a stop light and my truck started missing and as the rpm's got higher it started back firing.... NO change from when I took it in. I turned around and took it back. This time they keep my truck five days. I went to pick it up and expressed my concerns... I was told it is fixed, and was told a service adviser actually drove it home and back the next day to ensure there no were NO problems. I left the dealership... and accelerated and @ 2500 rpms the truck started missing(No back firing this time)I continued to drive my truck home and the missing continued. I called the dealership(47 miles from my residence) and explained to them that the truck is better(no back firing) but still misses when accelerating and acutally seems to bog down when I accelerate. I took the truck back(1878 miles) the dealer keep it three days. I was told they changed ALL plugs and Coil packs per FORD TSB. I picked it up... and the same crap!! Still missing under acceleration. I called the dealer back and was told to "run a few tanks of fuel through it" I now have 3342 miles on it and it is still missing under lite acceleration and seems to be bogging down... also my fuel mileage has drop to 12.8 as shown on the digital gauge from a high of 15.1, The odd thing is sometimes the truck will run great! but not for very long maybe a mile or so then back to missing and sluggish. It never runs good consistently. I called the dealer and it is going back Monday 9/4/06. I apologize for being long winded...Any and ALL replies are welcome. PLEASE HELP. A loyal FORD guy.

If I had to guess, maybe on of the wries that is going to one of your coils sounds like it might have a bad connection or even some kind of short. But how to trouble shoot something that is inter minted is almost in possible if you don't catch it in the act. well I don't know if that will help you at all, but keep us posted on whatever the dealer finds out. Good luck. Brad

I would keep on them. Talk to the service manager and bring up the fact that you are concerned about what all the missing is doing to the engine as far as long term damage. Maybe you can get a extended warranty out of them from all the inconvenience of having such a new truck out of service for so long. As far as whats wrong with it try looking over the engine and make sure all the connectors are plugged in good. Especially around the plugs and where the techs were working last. Maybe one of the connectors is just a little loose.

Thanks for all the replies....I will check all the wiring connections. As for being mad. What do you think? A new truck which I paid $32K for and @ 17XX miles it starts this crap. I have called everyone involved @ the dealership. As mad as I am though the service guys have not said a cross word(to my face). I understand things(components)can fail but dam. I do want to add that each time the dealer has loaned me a VERY comparable vehicle. I am so frustrated I could just "Go Postal" but I am being treated so NICE!!! I kinda wish someone would say something derogitory so I could VENT!!!

I polled you guys to give me a better understanding of what might be causing this... I am perplexed as sometimes you can feel the truck "Run Perfect" breifly and then go back to this sluggish crap.. and when lightly accelerating you can feel it missing badly, and under heavy acceleration it misses so bad it will not get the rpms high enough to even shift... you must let off the accelerator to allow the truck to change gears.

This truck RAN great until the day this "CHIT" started... I was drving @ arounf 65 mph and the truck bucked and started backfiring. and has had this problem ever since(they did fix the backfiring issue). The one thing that does **** me off with the dealer is that they WILL NOT give me copies of the work orders... "They say... Its covered under warranty, and I do not need a copy as I paid nothing for the maintenance work or labor" I responded that I want a copy for my records. I was told to "write FORD MOTOR CO. and provide my VIN and request ALL Service records for my vehicle and they will provide them @ a cost of $1.00 per page"

I just hope the third time is a charm .... it goes back Monday. I'll post the outcome.

Call the Ford area manager. Look in your owner's manual for info.

I never leave the dealership without a copy of the repair order. This does two things. #1 it states my concerns about the issues and what the dealer did to try to fix it. #2 it shows when and for how long the vehicle was is their possession. Not to sold negative but I don't really trust the dealer service departments. If you don't have copies of the repair order, you don't have any proof at all that the dealer even had your truck. Without the repair order for all you know they didn't work on it and it comes down to your word against theirs. And we all know how that will turn out. Insist on getting paperwork for all dealer repairs. If they refuse, get a dealer manager involved. If its still a problem, get the owner involved.

how much fuel is in your tank when you floor it? believe it or not, my own truck would feel like it was missing or cutting out when i floored it with 1/4 tank or less. if that fuel comes away from the pickup for a split second, fuel pressure will drop and cause the problem. believe me, i had mine in many times for missing and cutting out on accelleration, before i found out that was the problem.

Blueoval, my 05 screw did the same thing at 50,000. Turned out to be a faulty injector #5. Stumbled and shook when accelerating and back fired when idling. Also had a different odor at the exhaust.

Sea Foam

Maybe you picked up some water in the gas? I add a can of Sea Foam at least every other month and sometimes monthly. Using Sea Foam has fixed many a miss.
I pickup and move vechicles for my company. This can be coast to coast for half way. My first stop is always the auto parts for 2 cans of Sea Foam.

Maybe some one on this forum can run an Oasis report for him. The Oasis report will give you everything the dealer has done to your truck.

If someone can do this for you, they will need your VIN.

I had the same problem right after I got my 04' F150 XLT 4x4. It was like the this would miss and want to die or loose power when "getting on it". The dealership had mine for 5 weeks and gave me a loaner. they tried just about everything including new coil-packs with out getting the problem resolved. They ended up just trying new plugs and found out that that was the problem. They replaced all 8 plugs and coil-packs and the truck has run good for the past 1.75 years and now I have over 90k miles on it and thinking about changing the plugs again before I start having problems.

Have your dealership call Massuccis Geneva Ford in Ohio about this problem and they will verify what they did to resolve it.

Hello Again... Sorry for the LATE UPDATE,

My truck is fixed. It turned out to be injector #4 and #5 bad.(Laid Over, is what was written on the work order) I asked about the previous work orders and was FINALLY given copies. Believe it or not, on the first work order it says "R & R'd all injectors per TSB"

Anyway it's fixed... I've driven over 2K miles without any problems.

Thanks Blueoval007

glad to hear it is fixed. You probly know this... but you don't have to go back to the same dealer for work on your truck. Some dealers I wouldn't bring a kids trike to for service.

but what caused the injectors to fail? I can understand 1 injector, but 2 at the same time. from what you described, I would almost say your engine was getting gulps of water that contributed to the failure
