I appreciate all the help.. In the process of jacking up each of the front wheels and locking and unlocking the hubs something changed(I think one must have been stuck) It went from the passenger wheel doing whatever the front drive shaft was doing and the drivers side just sitting there to .......both wheels doing whatever the front drive shaft is doing. I am mechanically inclined but know nothing about 4wd. SHould both wheels be locked in to the front drive shaft all the time and its locked in at the transfer case??? IF yes then I think It was just stuck and needs grease., IF no, THen I need to follow your troubleshooting idea in your last post
All of this sounds identical to what mine was doing. The basic issue was the brokern vacuum line. Please buy new hose and replace the hose from the wheel to fenderwell point with new hose. Be careful at the chassey it is a plastic part and if you get rough you will break it.
Now the second problem is your hubs are in need of clean and lube. Once you do this you should be ok, Sounds like the transfer case is locking in just the hub lock issue. One of my hubs had been abused with a wrench before I bought the Excursion and the part you turn was broken. I also had a stuck hub that would not release unless tapped lightly with a hammer. I did put in all new vac lines. I just bought 2 used hubs on ebay for $102 and from the 4 hubs I expect to rebuild at least 2 working auto hubs. I also agree that if you clean and lube them occasionally you should have no issues. Jim
This really is a reliable system if you replace the vacuum hoses once in a while and clean/lube the hubs
My auto hubs are giving me the same issue. Intermitent engagement. If they work like this when it 80 degrees I have no doubt they will not work when its -25.
I have taken them apart twice and cleaned them to perfection. They will be thrown in the garbage when I replace them this fall with some aftermarket locking hubs.
They still have the manual lock but compared to the hubs on my other rigs these things are junk.
And I have checked every vac line mulitiple times and measured the vac at the hub. It all works just like it should.
MX, you can pick up a pair of warns at your local parts store for about $120.00 a pair ..the guy I went to matched the lowest online price I found..stock auto hubs (also made by warn) are $600.00 a pair available at ford only.....the auto hub Itself Is not a bad hub...Its the vacuum principle used to engage It that I dont like.....too many times with mine...plowing a lot of snow over 170,000 mi ...the hubs wernt In pristeen enough condition to be engaged or disengaged from a puff of vacuum.....Like I said with the warns ..When there IN there In..when there OUT there OUT...EVERYTIME........Keep In mind I gave up my auto hubs kicking and screaming...but...I have NO more hub issues.....AHHHHHHHHHHHH
