crank/no start condition

If your 302cid depends on Pertronix 1281 electronic ignition, how do you verify it is working? Reason I ask is I don't see a spark jump even with coil plug. The wires all look secure. Of course 1 black, 1 red leave the module. Can I use my multimeter on these to verify/troubleshoot the lack of functionality?

Thanks in advance. (PS: This was a custom engine swap -- seller had no documentation)

the pulses to the coil would be too fast for the multi-meter. now that i think about it, this would prob require an oscillascope.

When it is cranking, you can see the pulses somewhat if you have an older needle type meter. You can't see them when it's running though.

One of the failure modes I have seen with these is the wires breaking internally right at the module. The module mounts on the points plate, and the plate moves back and forth continually as you drive to advance and retard the timing. If the wires were a little tight when someone installed the unit, the module will tug on the wires, and after awhile they will break. You can't see it, since it's inside the insulation. You can pinch the wires with two fingers and lightly tug on the wire, and if the wire stretches, it's a sign it is broken internally.

P.S. You can also put the points back in it and see if it will run. I know lots of people with these modules who carry a set of points in the glove box incase they get stranded with this module.
