I bought a speed nut from Ford which clips on to the frame to receive the 14mm bolt to hold down the bed but the nut has no threads. Is it defective, or is it some kind of self-tapping nut? The original speed nut looks pre-threaded. My truck is a '99 F350 Off Road 4X4. Thanks.
miles, i read in one of my ford books that the bed mount bolts are used to thread the nut during the factory install process. i didnt think it was true until i looked at one of my rear seat mount bolts, and it was threaded crooked in the hole. i also read that they are put in at over 200 foot pounds. they are some kind of torque to yeild process, and cant be used twice. i guess you pull 'em and chuck 'em. i think the nut you bought is okay, you'll just need a good impact wrench to install. grusson
I have purchased other factory replacement items that had unthreaded holes as well. I replaced one of the bolts on my Ranger bed, but got the speednut at a NAPA auto parts store. It had threads.
