I just bought a speedo cluster for my 64 F-100 for $15.00. It was out of a 65 F-700. The truck had 2468 miles on it. It was a bulk refueler that was once used on base down here. My question is for the ammeter what size wire does it require to need. It had what I believe was a 8-10 guage wire running through a loop shaped piece of metal. Does it matter what size wire is ran through it? The only real differance with the new one is it has the oil psi and ammeter in it. Also the fuel guage moved from the top left to the bottom right.
I don't know if this will help but here goes. On my '66, I swapped in the deluxe gauge dash with the oil and amp gauge. The amp gauge had a seperate wire harness that interfeced perfectly with the reguular harness, using very heavy wire. There is alot of direct voltage going thru the stock amp gauge! There is a junction block that splits the battery off from the solonoid mounted on the fenderwell. If you have access to the big parts truck, try to get the harness that was connected to the gauge. It should be modular and easily removeable with a little wire tracing. The fuel gauge should hook up the same way in any (gas) truck. I do not know if diesel or dual tank trucks were different.
I was kind of thinking along the lines of going back and getting the wiring that is still in the truck. I just don't want to do it at this time. It's cold as well, winter outside. I was also toying with the idea of routing a new 8 gauge wire from the alt through the firewall and gauge then back to the battery. It might be a better idea to get the old harness and go that route though. Thanks.
If your old truck just had the oil light, be sure to get the "beehive" oil sender from the parts truck too!. Your stock oil light sender will not work the oil gauge. This gauge also had it's own harness, again a modular one that should be easy to remove. I got a brass t-fitting and am running both the oil light and the Oil gauge from the same original location, using the 2 different wires.I got a new beehive sender from the local Auto Zone, so they seem to be still available. Good luck with your project!.
I have in the works a idiot light/gauge combo. I am going to keep the oil light and alt. light. I have to go to another truck for the oil sender and adapter. The parts cab I am getting all of my dash parts out of is missing the engine. Well it's missing the rest of the truck for that matter. Half of the roof is pulled up and off. I thought it still had a good windsheild until I pulled the vines away from the passanger side of the cab. It still has all of the running lights on it though. Do you know anyone who needs a vacum wiper system, vacum gauge, or original tach (0-4000 rpm, face is a little faded)? The guy still has the original doors kept inside if anyone is interested. I pulled the light switch and connector already. I think I am going to pull the fuse panel too. Just not too sure if I want to go with that or the EZ Wiring kit.
