I just got my 01 F250 checked out at diesel shop in my area and they said they have narrowed the knock down to cylinder #7. I was suspecting an injector was bad and they said, that could very well be and that is where they would start. I was wondering, where is the best place to get a good but low cost injector to replace it? Should I even try to rebuild it or just replace it?
did the shop do a cylinder contribution test?
a used oil anaylsis can possibly show if a bearing, or ring is bad without having to open up the engine. it's alot cheaper too about $20

They didn't. The guy said that injector was weak and he is about 98% positive that it was the cause on the knock. I will change it next week and let you all know.
how does he know that #7 injector is the week one without running the cylinder contribution test. you might not even have a bad injector. i wouldn't start throwing parts at it until i was sure of what the problem is. a cct should only cost about $100 or less. while injector + install will be alot more, if it even is an injector, and if he guessed the wrong one, it will cost even more. who knows without some more testing.
mho
HOLD ON! I miss read! I kept reading compression not contribution. Is a contribution test when they take the valve cover off and they check each injector one at a time? If so, then YES.

That's the hard way. The easy way is to hook up a scanner and watch for rpm drop in a percentage value for each cylinder as it's idleing. The weakest injector will yield the highest number.
