Quick Question?

I Posted A While Back About Putting A 429 0r 460 Efi Engine In My 76 F-150. What I Was Wondering Is Would The 460 Be The Best Choice Or Would A 5.8 Be Better I Don't Tow Much Just The Camper A Few Times A Year But I Do Like To Have Fun In The Truck. I Do Have Some Experience With The 5.8 I Put One In My 67 Bronc. I Guess I Was Just Wondering If It Would Be More Cost Effective To Stay With A "so Called Bigblock" Or Stick With A Slightly Built Small Block?

Thanks
Kris

Well you asked that question in the 385 series engine forum so the answer will be simple use the big block, ask the same question in the windsor forum and the answer will be use the 5.8. But since we are hear, just remember a bone stock 460 usually has more torque for pulling, and playing than a reasonably built small block, and so much more potential that it's not even funny, you could spend say $6000 on a 5.8 to get in the 400hp range maybe a little more and have it not streetable or spend $1000 on a 460 get it to 400hp on the cheap gas and have good idle, and good vacumn for your power brakes, it seems like a no brainer to me. A truck should have the big block period small blocks should be used in small cars (mustangs etc) even small trucks work good with a big block

That answers my question! I thank ya for the reply. What comp pistons would be best suited for a build like that? And also are there any year heads that are better than others? I am more that capable of building the engine myself my grandpa is a wealth of knowledge 50 years or so of mechanical work. He is set on the 390 but I want the EFI and the Stock Ford EFI is hard to beat in my opinion. So I guess 460 Here we come!! It is time to retire the old 360.

390 to a 410! Not to bash too hard on the FE's BUT the amount of aftermarket parts and support for the 385 series is off the chart. Ok enough of that. Seriously to make 400hp like mostarbaby said is very true. You only need to install a "RV" cam to bring a stock 460 to life. If you want to get totally out of your mind you can do so with great ease since the Engine Masters Challenge came out. The market has been flooded with all sorts of parts compared to 6 years ago.

Ok guys what will I need to put a 460 in? What bell housings will work and what motor mounts can I use. Also who sells a reasonably priced longblock that is not junk? I want a good stout motor but not realy a wild one. I have a bellhousing off of a 400 any chance the bolt pattern is the same?

Yes the 400 bellhousing will work. As for motor mounts we need to know if your truck is 4 wheel or 2 wheel drive.

Where do you live first off. That may get some more responces to your question of reputable machine shops. Also did you look in the classifieds on our site?

darrin,
What kind of mounts did you get from Summit?

Kris, I would recomend L&L or Performance Unlimited for mounts. Since your truck has a 360 you will need to move the towers on the frame also. I unbolt them from the frame then have them bolted to the engine mounts when the engine is bolted up to the bellhousing then square the engine in the bay and weld them to the frame were they need to go.
