what size tires for a 4x4?

Hey I plan on getting larger BFG M/T tires and I currently have 245's on but want to go bigger. Its between 265's or 285's, but what I have read 285's will need a wider rim then my stock rims and was wondering if I did get 285's how much power loss would I notice with my 4.6??

Thanks

As long as you have the standard 16" stock rims, which are 8" wide, then 285's will fit no problem. If you're not sure what size rim you have, call up your dealership and ask them. Chances are you're fine. With the 285's, the truck will seem a little sluggish. Add intake & exhaust and you'll make up for the "loss". Go a step further and add a flash tuner and use some premium fuel and you'll love it. Also, I'd recommend getting different gears, at least 4.10's. The stock 3.55's along with 285's are not the best combo. I definitely wouldn't go any bigger w/o a gear swap. There .. my 2 cents.

Red face 4x4 tread ?

Just being a *#@^ at the moment. "How big a tire for a 4x4 ?" How big are your wallet and/or ego ? I'd go with a slightly wider tire but I'd be more concerned with the tread pattern. I've seen a few F-350's with 20" rims and 60 series tires and SLAMMED to boot. A lot of $$$ for show. Just my opinoin - but 1 ton trucks with BIG wire-rim wheels and low rider stance look goofy. Check out the 4x4 Forum and some Off Road magazines and/or clubs. The majority is usually good business.

I want to add the 285's on my stock rims but the guy at the tire store didn't recommend it because they are only 7" wide rim. Would this really make a big affect on the tire being .half a inch too small for width?
