Hi fellas, well the trucks almost done and I need some more help. I installed a new tailgate and latch hardware. Yes, all of it, My question is how in the h#@% do you hook up the handle to the bars that open the latchs. I have the whole handle and new latchs, but I'm missing something.I can't get the bars hooked up to the handle. I know theres a trick!!!
Unscrew and remove the panel on the tail gate to access the workings easier first of all. If you are talking about the what holds the rods to the handle, there are plastic clips that hold them in. You can get these clips at the dealership for a couple of bucks. The rods go into the holes with the clips in place (through the holes in the clips), then the clips fold down around the rods to keep them in place. Kinda like some carb accellerator linkages.
I hope this made sense. I can see it but it is hard to explain without a visual.
Clips are also available in the HELP section at the parts store but unfortunately they are made of an inferior plastic that is very brittle. Get the good parts from FORD.
guys, thanks I have all the parts, and all installed, BUT the rods, is there a trick to hooking them up?? I have the latchs installed and tried to put the rods on before the handle was installed but it snaps back before i can bolt it in. should i put the rods on the handle then connect the rods and bolt on???
I was actually going to go take a picture of my latch to show how they connect but then I remembered that my rods were being held on with bailing wire :P
I found that with the rods attached to the latch, unbolt the handle assembly, lift the handle of the assembly so that the lever is in the farthest upward position hold it there and attach the rods to the plastic clips and then bolt on the handle assembly to the tailgate.....fyi make sure you tape off around the tailgate handle hole so you don't scratch your paint....
thanks again guys for your help. I will have pics soon..
