Motor Lifting

I am getting ready to remove my "race motor" and take it to a mechanic to get a milder cam installed. I plan on removing the grill and hood and both front fenders. Then i want to unbolt the motor and remove it. My question is since it has headers installed where do I hook the chain to lift it? My next question is how do the inner fenders come off because I want to get some paint work done while the motor is out.

Your fender aprons are bolted to the core support and the fenders. Once the fender is out of the way, it's real easy to remove the aprons.

If you don't plan to disassemble the front end sheet metal, you might find it easier and faster to undo the whole clip in one piece. Then you can consider leaving the engine in the frame for the work.

jc, I agree with removing the clip. Remove the rad support, the inner fender and outer fender at the cab, with the hood off, the complete clip can be removed. You will have to unplug the wiring also.

The easiest way to lift the motor is to buy a carb plate that bolts to the intake manifold where a 4bbl carb. bolts up. Or you can find a couple of longer than stock grade 8 bolts and use one intake bolt hole on opposite sides of the engine . One on the front right and one on the left rear or visa-versa. If you are pulling the trans too, center your hook on the hoist chain so that the rear of the engine tilts down, this will make it eaisier to get the tranny out past the firewall.

So you are saying a couple of bolts will be O.K. to lift the engine???

Is it really that simple!?!?!?!

I thought maybe somekind of sling or cradle was needed.

The only motor I every say lifted had chains running to the exhaust manifolds and my motor has headers.

3/16th's or 1/4" steel plate with carbueretor bolt pattern & a SECURELY welded hook should do the trick for you.

I've pulled many a motor with 2 bolts. As long as they are grade8 . I have never dropped one yet. Most of the prebuilt carb plates, available at most speed shops and mail order like Summit, actually have 3 hook holes so that you can get the proper angle to get it out of the truck. I usually use the 2 bolt method, you can vary the angle by where you put the hoist hook on the chain bolted to the motor.

Biggest problem I found when trying to disassemble the sheetmetal on these trucks is the blind nuts breaking off when I try to remove the bolts. Be carefull, especially if you try to remove your hood hindges from the cowl, if any of the blind nuts break off from behind, there is no way to repair this unless you cut open the cowl and reweld it together when done!! I have always had good luck using opposite corner head bolts, of proper grade of course, to remove the block. Check your clearence if doing this in your garage, your truck will raise up once the engine is lifted up from the frame..

This may sound kind of stupid but remember that you are pulling the motor out of a truck that is higher then a car by far so the angle you use to pull the motor is critical. Using two bolts and a chain and then sliding the engine is a good method but if the angle gets to steep then life gets exciting fast. Most u-haul places have a double adjusting chain that can be used to adjust the center as well as the rear and front height of your chain so be careful it only weights about 300+ pounds he he

Keith, If he has a FE 352/390 it will weigh more than twice that.

I usually use an existing top bellhousing bolt at the back and another bolt in the front of one of the heads.
