Hey everyone! This is my first time on the escape forum so this may have already been discussed. Well anyway my wife has an 04 escape with the continintal tires on it. Even after an alignment and rotating the tires the tires sound like super swampers on the road. I mean you want to put ear plugs in because it is so loud. The tires aren't wearing evenly and I was just wondering what is was. I'm guessing it is the struts but i'm not sure. Any input would be appreciated its driving us crazy.
You'll be happy when you get rid of those Continentals. We put some Yokohama's on the wife's tribute and it was pretty much night and day.
One of the Conti's went bad around 35,000 and we ended up replacing all 4- Important to keep the wife happy. She wasn't keen on forking out money for tires while the old ones still had life. The very first commute to work convinced her that it was the correct decision.
The tire store may or may not give you some credit for the used tires.
All the above is true but may not address your specific issue- especially about the uneven wear. Although on the wife's Tribute the one tire that was bad was wearing unevenly. Sounded like a bearing problem and the tire store told us the tire was out of round. The new tires are not showing signs of uneven wear- (Probably close to 30,000 on them)
Don't be to quick to blame the tires even if they are bad. Check your wheel bearings!
As mentioned, there may be more to it than just the tires. And it would be wise to eliminate any mechanical possibilities before throwing money at new tires- but you and the wife will be happier with the noise level and handling with a better set of tires.
If your 04 is still in warranty I'd have the dealer inspect it, struts, bearings and anything else you/they can think of. Incidently, we eliminated the bearing possibility when the potential bad bearing noise followed the suspect tire when we rotated it. Not the most scientific, but the noise is gone and the tires are wearing evenly.
Thanks for the input guys. I think i'll take it in to the dealer this week because i've got less than 3000 miles left on the warranty and the way my wife drives that won't last long. Thanks again.
