I have an '05 f250 4x4 and it sounds like theres a nest of baby birds in my tailgate. I've had it to the dealer twice and they can't or won't fix it. Its fine a day or so after its been in the shop...but comes back.
Anyone have this similar problem and had it corrected?
I think I may trade to a dodge mega cab...its breaking my heart.
You want to get rid of your SD because of a tailgate squeek?!! That seems a bit extreme!
But to answer your question, take some grease and spread it around all the metal parts of both latching mechanisms. This includes pulling up on the handle with the tailgate still open and putting grease in the moving parts there as well. Also grease the cylinder that the latch wraps around. That should take care of the squeek for a little while. Or, if you don't mind doing it more often, spray some liquid lube on everything. I personally use RemOil because that's what happens to be around. Sorry, but I don't know of any permanent solutions.
Yeah, it sounds pretty extreme to trade in your SD because of a squeak. I can understand because I am very particular that way too. Locating a squeak is one of the more difficult things. Once you know where it is coming from, it is easy to take care of. This type of vehicle with its weight and suspension will ride stiffer than a car, and when metal rubs on metal, you will get a squeak. If it sounds like it is coming from the tailgate, then try what EnviroCon suggested. If there is metal touching metal right now, you might be able to see by looking for rubbed areas and contact points. That is where you would want to hit it with the grease.
Thanks guys...i will give that a try. However they told me at the Dealer that they replaced the stoppers and greased everything. I'll try and get some duck butter and soak her down real good.

Just sucks having a noisy $40k truck.
What they said they did and what they really did may be two entirely different things. Take a look for yourself. This is probably one of those things better done by you than the dealer as you will probably be a bit more thorough with the lubrication. Good luck.
Can you get somebody (with no shame) to ride back there in the bed and identify exactly where the noise is coming from?
