The engine on my '96 F350 has been cutting out intermittently. This just started around a week ago but has gotten so bad I don't feel comfortable driving it around town anymore. I replaced the CPS today, but it had no effect. Where should I be looking for the cause? I checked trouble codes today and only had P0236 - Turbocharger Boost Sensor A Circuit Performance. I don't know if this is causing my trouble or something unrelated. I bought the truck in February, and have not had any problems with it until just recently. I have changed the fuel filter, air filter, all fluids, glow plugs, GPR, and now CPS.
No chip, but I use an Edge Evolution programmer. Shouldn't I get a P0344 if my CPS is sending the intermittent signal? I didn't have the code and replaced it anyway. Symptoms did not change with installation of new sensor. What about fuel pressure regulator, bad UVC harness, water in fuel? Can anything other than CPS cause these intermittent cutouts?
It's hard for me to tell exactly, but it feels like it's electronic, like the engine just quits for a split second then restarts. When it first started doing this, it only happened while idling in gear, which caused me to notice the sloppy dual mass flywheel as it jerked when it cut out. Now today it started doing it at high rpm on the freeway. It doesn't feel like a clogged fuel supply as it's not a constant sputtering. I don't think it's bad fuel either because I didn't just fill up, nor is it sucking from the very bottom either. Both tanks are at 1/4 right now. The water in fuel light has not illuminated either.
Is there any way to test the IDM? I don't know anyone with a PSD that I can swap IDM's with. I'll pull VC's tomorrow and check injector harnesses. Faulty/loose wiring to the CPS maybe? But would that cause it to throw an intermittent signal code?
k guys maybe this is a stupid question on my part but what is the idm though, keep hearing it said but still aint figured it out yet. thanks lance
IDM = Injector Driver Module is used in conjunction with the PCM to sequentially control power to the fuel injectors, controling injection timing and duration.
It's output is 115v DC. You'll know when you touch it.

May be bad wire/connection in MAP sensor. Apply vacuum to sensor, does it hold vacuum for 1+ minute?
