I am switching a 90' F-250 7.3 with an E4OD over to a five speed. The donor truck is a 90' F-250 with a 7.3. I am wondering if anybody out there has done this before and has any advice. The first thing I am wondering about is the speedometer, The five speed has a mechanical cable for the speedo, and the E4OD is electronic if I remember correctly. I thinK the speedo in the auto is run off the rear diff, is that right?. Any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.
I think there is quite a bid of confusion on the speedo drives as 1990 was one of those transition years.
Check if both trucks have the same manual odometer (milage counter) The odometer should be manual driven by a manual cable which piggy backs onto the sending unit in the tail of the transfer case for 4x4's and tail of the tranny on non-4x4's. The two wires in the sending unit provide the signal for the speedo.
Since your trucks are 1990' which if I remember correctly is the first year that these trucks had ABS, the manual truck "may" already use the ABS speed sensor in the rear axle for the speedo. The automatics did not start using the ABS speed sensor in the rear axle for the speedo until 1992.
My 91' F350 E4OD still uses the sensor in the back of the TC housing and has a manual odometer. My dads 92 F250 E4OD uses the sender in the rear axle, his truck has got the newer body style with the digital odometer.
