Help! I am stuck at work.... I have a 1997 explorer sport w/ 4.0 sohc It cranks fast... no start....where is inertia switch? and what about the fuel relay? I see 3 identical relays under the panel....which is what? I have no owners manual.... Thanks for the help!
its looking like a cam position sensor at the moment...I will post more as I narrow it down.....the tach was not moving as I was cranking it.... a tech friend saw that when I was asking him his opinion.....still any input is more than welcome.....thanks in advance
When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the fuel pump prime for a second or 2. If you don't hear that, your problem may be fuel related. Possibilities include; FP relay, inertia switch, or the fuel pump(last thing to try).
The cam sensor will not cause a no start condition. It may take several attempts, but the engine will start and run with a bad cam sensor if there are no other faults. In fact, you can disconnect the cam sensor completely and the engine will still have a 1 of 3 chance in starting for any given attempt.
A faulty crank sensor (among many other things) will kill the spark.
well ,replaced cam sensor.. still no start... and I do NOT have spark... so crank sensor is up......will let you know if this fixes said problem.....if anyone has any suggestions,I am all ears!... thanks in advance...mike
Bad CoilDist. Pack??? Any codes??? The money spent on a OBD II code reader is well worth it. I found one at Wal-mart for under $100.00. Works on other than Ford also.
What make/model code reader did you buy, and do you know if it works on Toyota as well? I bought one from Harbor Freight a couple of weeks ago and it worked on Ford, but not Toyota. Took it back.

What it works on will depend on the model year. I don't recall when they went to OBD-II. I know it did not work on my 93 F-150 but it does work on everything from my 96 Explorer to my brother's 01 Taurus. It will do Toyotas of the same vintage. I believe they went to the current system (name escapes me) in 02 or 03.
Well, I spray the screws with some lubricant to make removal easier... and when a friend went to check my codes with another style code reader,it started.....I am still going to change this out... but the one screw that is visable,is seemingly rounded off... what size is that screw? any suggestions on how to best get at it with the limited space? Thanks in advance...mike
