Question on 390 swap

I recently bought a 390 for my 1979 ford f150 which currently has the stock 351M. My question is, will the motor mounts need to be changed? And will my 390 bolt up to the C6 thats is currenty in the truck with the 351M. My 390 came with its motor mounts and its C6 but just not wanting to swap them out if I dont need to, Any thoughts? Oh and I have a 9 inch lift and always hear about haveing to change oill pans and not being able to fit headers cause of the front diff, any thoughts on that as well, thanks again for every ones in put

You'll need to use the C6 that came with the 390. But seeing as how your truck seems to be a 4x4, this may be more involved than it seems.

IIRC all 390 4x4's came with a divorced transfercase, and i'm pretty sure that by 79, the 4x4's were all using married cases.

The issue here is that the output shaft length is different between the 4x2/divorced 4x4 and the married 4x4 setup. The remedy to this situation is to have the 390 C6 rebuilt using the 351M C6's output shaft and tail housing (if the 390 C6 is a 4x2 or divorced 4x4 unit)

The bell housing between the two engines will not match, you'll have to use the tranny. Don't know about mounts, perches, or headers, someone else will come along who has dealt with that.

If all you have is the front sump pan, try it out while you look for the rear sump. My stock '74 had a front sump pan when I bought it. The pan had a deep dent in the bottom where it self-clearanced. It had been driven that way for several years before I bought it, you may not have trouble with that much lift.

The 3/4 ton would have the 390 and divorced transfer case, half-tons would have 360s with integral transfer case. More choices when you need parts-n-parts. Good catch with the 2x to 4x differences Justin.

You need to use a rear-sump pan as you have a 4x, but there should not be clearance issues. Headers should not be a problem, get them for a 76 truck with a 360 motor. I would also try and track down some engine perches (stands) that bolt to the frame from a 76 FE powered 4x truck too. The C6 off the back of your 351 will not bolt up, you can however use the internals and tail shaft from your current C6 to make the transfer case issues work better.

Yes the truck is a 4x4 and your saying to use the output saft off of the 351m tranny and use it with the 390's trans, correct, seems pretty simple or is it not, thanks for all the help by the way

Simple depends on your skill level or wallet depth. Both tranny's need to be totally disassembled and the 4x4 tailshaft transfered into the 4x2 case.

Did the 390 come with the mounts and the metal towers or just the mounts? You could use the metal towers from any FE or the inline 6. They are the same towers. I haven't really looked too hard but the only pan I have found for FE 4x4 is an aftermarket in the summit truck section for almost $300

That's what i've heard, that the 390 is a straight swap (frame wise) for a 300 when using truck mounts. Can anyone verify this?
